Is my tax refund coming? How to check your CRA status in 2026.
March 30, 2026|Updated: March 31, 2026

There’s no feeling quite like the relief of finally completing your tax return. Once that weight is off your shoulders, the anticipation begins. If you’re like millions of Canadians, your very next question is a simple one: Where is my refund?
The CRA has shifted toward a digital-first model in 2026, giving Canadians the power to monitor their assessment progress with the same ease as tracking a package delivery. However, understanding the difference between a "received" status and actual cash in your bank account is key. Here’s your guide to navigating the CRA tax refund timeline this year.
Table of contents:
Introducing the CRA Progress Tracker.
The CRA Progress Tracker is a relatively recent digital feature found within your CRA My Account. Unlike the old status updates that simply said "Assessed," the Progress Tracker provides a visual workflow of your tax return or benefit application.
How to use it:
- Log in to your CRA My Account.
- Look for the "Progress Tracker" link on the main overview page.
- You’ll see a step-by-step status bar showing where your return sits in the queue and an estimated completion date.
2026 tax refund timelines: How long is the wait?
Is it normal to wait 10 days for a direct deposit? In short: Yes. While the CRA has become increasingly efficient, processing times for 2025 tax returns (filed in 2026) depend entirely on how you filed.
CRA usual processing times 2026:
| Filing method | Average processing time | Direct deposit arrival most of the time |
| Electronic (EFILE/NETFILE) | 2 weeks (10 business days) | Within 8 business days of assessment |
| Paper return | 8 weeks | Up to 10-12 weeks |
| Returns requiring review | 4-6 months | Variable |
Pro tip: If you filed electronically and it’s been 10 days, don't panic. The CRA’s 8-day direct deposit window only begins once they’ve officially assessed your return. There’s often a short processing gap between the moment you click 'submit' in your tax software or when your Tax Expert transmits your file after your appointment.
More complex returns can sometimes take longer to be processed by CRA.
Notice of Assessment (NOA).
If you used tax software this year, you likely saw a refund amount the second you finished your data entry. Similarly, if you sat down with an H&R Block Tax Expert, they would’ve provided an estimated refund total during your appointment. But is that number official?
No. Your Notice of Assessment will include the final number. This is the official legal document issued by the CRA after they’ve fully verified your credits and deductions.
Why would my refund amount change?
While the estimate from your appointment is usually spot-on, the CRA acts as the final judge. Your NOA might differ from your initial estimate for a few common reasons:
- Government offsets: If you have outstanding debt, such as a student loan, an old tax balance, or overpaid benefits (like the Canada Child Benefit), the CRA may automatically apply your refund toward that debt.
- Missing information: If the CRA has a T4 or T5 slip on file for you that wasn't included in your filing, they’ll automatically adjust your return to include that income.
- Calculation adjustments: The CRA may correct a math error or deny a specific credit if their records show you aren't eligible this year.
Pro tip: Always wait for your NOA (viewable in your CRA My Account) before making large financial plans based on that refund number.
How to check your refund status without a CRA My Account.
