The Opportunity:
The Senior Tax Programmer reports to the Manager, Tax Development and is responsible for assisting in creating quality tax software through researching and implementing tax legislation changes, creating quality customer features, and working with the team to complete government tax software certification requirements.
The Senior Tax Programmer is responsible for optimizing results for clients and defining multiple facets of tax preparation software, including (but not limited to) guiding users through complex scenarios and ensuring the accuracy of their results.
The Senior Tax Programmer works closely with software developers, user experience designers, technical writers, and test analysts.
Key Areas of Responsibilities
- Acts as Canadian Tax subject matter expert for Product Managers, Business Analysts, Developers, Content Writers, and User Experience Specialists.
- Conducts research on complex tax preparation, compliance, and technical issues and interprets regulations.
- Translates tax calculations into programming code (Calculations, XML, PDF, Validations)
- Creates electronic tax files, designs tax form templates, and ensures tax software compliance with the Income Tax Act for CRA and RQ.
- Collaborates with software developers and tax compliance analysts to resolve software issues.
- Oversees government certification processes with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Revenu Québec (RQ).
- Provides mentorship to junior team members and takes the lead on projects and initiatives.
Key Qualifications and Education
- Post-Secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or Business Technology and 5 years of experience with the financial service industry preferably with tax compliance, regulatory, and certification processes or a relevant combination of education and experience.
- Has a deep understanding of Canadian and Quebec Tax Laws
- Minimum of 3 years with exposure to RQ tax law.
- Experience with software programming (such as Java) an asset.
- Completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Course an asset.
- Proficiency in technical writing.
- Excellent verbal and written English and French communications skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and Office Suite skills.
- Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
