The H&R Block Tax Training School is open to anyone who wants to gain a general working understanding of personal tax return preparation.

There are NO entrance requirements. The only thing you need is a desire to learn.

People of all ages and from all walks of life enrol in the H&R Block Tax Training School, and we offer a wide range of class times and locations to accommodate our students. Whether you are employed full-time, retired, a stay-at-home mom, or a college student, there's sure to be a course that fits your schedule.


About the Course

When is the H&R Block Tax Training School offered?
Classes start every autumn, and registration begins in August.

How long is the course?
In most locations across Canada, the course consists of 39 hours of training in the preparation of personal tax returns, followed by an additional 30 hours of computer tax software training.

How often does the class meet?
Classes generally meet twice a week for 11 weeks in three-hour sessions, or once a week for six hours if you choose a weekend class. Specific dates will be listed with the class you have chosen to attend.

May I enrol in a class once it has already begun?
Enrolment is permitted up to and during the first week of class, but it is discouraged after that time.

Where are the classes held?
The courses are held in classrooms at various H&R Block offices across the country. Once registration begins in August, you can use our Class Finder to check for a location near you.

What happens if I miss a class?
Classes are held days, evenings and weekends. If you need to miss your regular time, you may be able to take a class at another time that week.

What if I fail the course?
Courses are graded. If you attend the classes, participate, do the homework, and listen to the instructor, you should have no problem succeeding.

How is the class taught?
The basic method of instruction is directed discussion with the use of custom-designed textbooks and visual aids.

Will there be homework?
Yes, there is homework. For every hour of class, it's anticipated that you will be doing an hour of work on your own.

Will we be using computers?
The course is designed to give you foundation training in income tax preparation, and you will be working directly with an instructor, textbook and manual forms. In most locations, this is followed by instruction on the computer using our tax software.

What is the typical class size?
The typical class size is about 20 students, and it never exceeds 30 students.

Who teaches the classes?
Course instructors are chosen according to their experience and specialized training in tax return preparation.

I attended an income tax course in college. Will the H&R Block course still be useful to me?
Yes. College and university courses provide tax theory, but may not provide the practical application of completing the forms. Our course lets you apply the theory you've learned.

Costs

How much does the H&R Block Tax Training School cost?
The cost of the course varies slightly across Canada. It is set each August, when registration begins for our fall sessions. More details are available either from our online Class Finder or at your local H&R Block office.

When do I pay for the course?
Payment must be received before the start of the first class. You can pay in full at the time of registration. You may also pay at your closest district office with a personal cheque, credit card, cash or money order. If you are registering online, payment by credit card is required to process the registration.

How much do the materials cost?
The price of tuition includes all books and materials. All you need to bring is a pencil and a willingness to learn. Calculators are recommended, but not required.

Registration Process

How do I register?
Our online registration system is an easy way to register for the H&R Block Tax Training School and will be activated to process students on August 2.

Until then, please submit our inquiry form and you will be contacted when classes are forming.

You can also contact a local office and register in person or over the phone.

What if I decide to cancel and not take/complete the course?
Generally, you may forfeit the registration fee and possibly part of your course fees, depending on provincial regulations and the point in time in which you cancel. Contact your instructor or local office to cancel.

After the Course is Completed

What happens when I complete the H&R Block Tax Training School?
Certificates of Accomplishment will be presented to passing students. Successful completion of the course requires a minimum overall course grade of 70 percent. The final grade is determined from the score achieved on assignments and the final exam.

Do you offer advanced courses?
Our advanced tax courses are currently reserved for employees and are not offered to the public.

Are competitors' courses similar?

Are job opportunities available at H&R Block?
Many successful students are offered job interviews. However, H&R Block does not provide placement assistance upon completion of the course. Completion of the course is neither an offer nor a guarantee of employment.
