Online Tax FAQ

Who should use the H&R Block Online Tax Program?

Anyone with Internet access who is interested in filing their taxes online. Designed for H&R Block by industry experts, the Online Tax Program is easy, flexible and secure.

My return is complex. Can I still use the Online Tax Program?

Our program can handle most complex individual tax returns, including self-employed, rental and small business returns. However, it cannot prepare non-resident or deemed resident returns, or corporate returns.

How much will it cost?

The first family member return is only $15.95 and a second is only $10.00 more. Additional family members are free!

When and how will I need to pay?

You can register for the program and get a feel for it before you are required to pay. Once you are satisfied that this is the way you'd like to prepare your taxes for this year, you can either pay when the screen prompts you to do so, or click on the "PAY FOR TAX RETURN" icon at the top of the screen.

We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

How long does it take to prepare and file my return?

Although the average return takes up to two hours to complete, the amount of time you spend will depend on you and your return. With the Online Tax Program, you can work at your own pace. And you won't need to spend time finding forms or doing calculations.

I won't have time to finish my return in one sitting. Can I continue later?

Yes. That's the convenience of filing taxes online. You can work on your return whenever and for however long you wish. You can start it today with the slips you already have and complete it when you have all your slips available.

Just remember your username and password, and you can come back to your online tax return anytime.

Will I need to install or download anything in order to use the Online Tax Program?

There is no program to install. All you need is your Internet connection. The application you’ll be using is located on secure servers at all times.

Once you have completed your return, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to print your tax return in PDF format.

You will be asked whether you wish to save your return on your computer’s hard drive. If you choose this option, you will be saving only the files you have created.

Will H&R Block be filing my return?

No. You have two options for filing your return. You can either print it out and mail it in, or you can use the NETFILE electronic service if your return qualifies.

I used the Online Tax Program last year. Will I be able to carry forward information from that return into this year's?

Any returns saved in your user account from last year will automatically be carried forward when you log into the newest version of the Online Tax Program using the same user ID and password as last year.

How do I get a refund or pay taxes I owe?

You have lots of options, especially if you NETFILE your tax return. If you're expecting a refund, you can choose a direct deposit into your bank account or wait to receive a cheque in the mail.

If you owe taxes, you can mail a cheque with a paper return or with the remittance form included in your tax package. You can also pay your tax bill if you participate in online banking with your financial institution. Make sure you specify any date, up to April 30, 2010, to pay your taxes without incurring late fees.
