The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager, Tax Development, the Lead, Tax Programmer will be part of a collaborative, agile team responsible for the end-to-end design, development, implementation, maintenance, compliance and accuracy of the tax software.

You will lead collaboration with all stakeholders for the tax software including architecture design, contributions to data design decisions and business requirements. Your contributions in this role will pave the path forward and shape the future of H&R Block.


Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Lead the application of design patterns within the Tax Platform team being mindful of scalability and performance.
  • Establish, promote, review, and refine coding standards within the team.
  • Support, coach, and mentor fellow Tax Platform team members.
  • Collaborate with user-experience designers, technical writers, business domain experts, database administrators and quality assurance to build new products and features which will help take our business to the next level.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into non-technical language for consumption by Tax Compliance and Accuracy Team members, Product Owners, and business stakeholders.
  • Assist with workload management of ad hoc requests and delegation of business requests to ensure timely completion of all deliverables and contribute to work effort estimates.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to scope project deliverables, dependencies, and timelines.
  • Lead technical decision-making.
  • Design and document solution architecture in collaboration with other technical leads and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and Microservices to advocate for and lead the resolution of outstanding technical debt.

Key Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in software development.
  • IT project management experience is an asset.
  • Experience with JAVA-based technologies.
  • Mastery of object-oriented development principles, design patterns, methodologies, and architectures.
  • Must have experience with either Azure or AWS cloud-based development.
  • Knowledge of .NET based technologies is considered an asset.
  • Experience with HTML, jQuery, CSS/SCSS and related technologies is an asset.
  • Three years’ experience with tax compliance, regulatory, and certification processes is preferred but not required.
  • Deep curiosity of personal taxation.
  • Ability to interpret tax law and research complex tax scenarios, then translate into non-technical terms.
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative, and agile team environment.
  • Passionate about software development.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to lead and mentor colleagues.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
